Mineral licks are rare in the Amazon Basin and attract many species. They also attract predators in the same way a dry season waterhole does on the African savannah. Egrets are wonderful to photograph, always taking on interesting postures shaping the light around their elongated form. In this scene I metered off the birds feathers and then deliberately underexposed the scene. This maintained feather detail and helped deepen the shadows isolating the bird from it’s background.
