Jason Edwards Photography
Jason Edwards is a National Geographic photographer, television host, author, and global storyteller whose career spans more than three decades at the frontlines of science, culture, and the natural world.
Based in Melbourne, Australia, Jason began his professional life as a senior zookeeper specialising in carnivores and primates — an early grounding in animal science that continues to inform his work today. From those beginnings, he has gone on to build one of the most extensive and diverse image portfolios in National Geographic’s history, photographing on every continent and across dozens of countries.
⎯ For me, photography is more than capturing beautiful pictures. It's about taking people on a journey.
Since 2010, Jason has been the face and creator of Pure Photography for National Geographic Channel, bringing complex environmental, biological, and cultural stories to global television audiences. His work is defined by an authentic, observational approach — documenting rather than directing — and by a rare ability to translate complex issues into emotionally resonant narratives for mainstream audiences.
Jason’s imagery has appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide, including National Geographic Magazine, BBC Wildlife, The New Yorker, Condé Nast Traveler, Sports Illustrated, and Australian Geographic. He is the author and photographer of Icebergs to Iguanas, a large-format book series celebrating the diversity of life on Earth, and has produced science-education books for younger audiences, extending his commitment to learning and curiosity across generations.
His contributions to science communication and visual storytelling have been recognised with numerous international honours, including two Eureka Prizes for Science Photography, multiple Communication Arts Photography Annual awards, ProMax Golden Muse Awards, POYi Pictures of the Year International, and Travel Photographer of the Year. He has also been honoured as one of the world’s “100 Photography Heroes” by Professional Photographer magazine in London.
Beyond publication and broadcast, Jason is a sought-after keynote speaker, mentor, and educator. He has guided photographers of all levels in ethical storytelling, field craft, and visual literacy, and has led expeditions and workshops in some of the world’s most remote and challenging environments. His work consistently champions indigenous cultures, biodiversity, and the fragile relationship between people and place.
In 2025, Jason was appointed a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Perry World House, University of Pennsylvania, where he contributed to climate dialogue, environmental humanities, and global policy conversations. His work at Penn explored the power of visual storytelling to influence public understanding, policy frameworks, and collective action in an era defined by climate change and technological disruption.
Jason is an Ambassador for Tourism Australia and Sustainability Victoria, a Friend of the Australia Museum, an Associate Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, and a trusted voice at the intersection of conservation, communication, and culture.
Across photography, television, public speaking, and education, Jason Edwards’ work is driven by a single belief: that stories — when told honestly and with care — have the power to deepen understanding, shift perspectives, and inspire meaningful change.
