There are moments when the light sings and there is no one or nothing, in the frame to listen. There are also times when it all comes together. A female Leopard surveys a woodland at dawn from the fork of a tree. The dust and smoke laden dawn was so red and saturated I was lucky this occurred after the sun had risen a little above the horizon.

Where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian Ocean the seas are forever in motion. Currents mix, nutrients upwell from the depths, and waves relentlessly erode cliffs and beaches. I love doing aerial work from helicopters, I find it far more rewarding than using a remote craft. I guess I just like being there physically as well as creatively.

The geometric scales of a Parsons Chameleon tail. When at rest, the long prehensile appendage coils beneath the reptile in an elegant spiral. When awake and active, it becomes an anchor or fifth-leg to enable the chameleon to remain motionless whilst hunting or moving between branches.

The mosaic jigsaw patterns on the flank hide skin of a Masai giraffe. I have always looked for the art in the mosaic of a giraffes hide. The patterns are always different, ebbing and flowing across the skin like an enormous walking canvas. When the light hits the sheen of the fur it dances like sunlight on water.

A herd of African Elephant stampede across the Serengeti plain at the height of the dry season. Note how they surround the small calf to protect it from predators. A pride of lion were sitting nearby, and a cat emerging from the dry grass likely startled the elephants into action.

A Reef Shark glides through god rays in the remote Tuamotu Islands. The catastrophic impact fishing is having on shark populations globally has resulted in nearly every species of shark being listed at some level of risk, from Near Threatened to Critically Endangered.

Egrets are wonderful to photograph, always taking on interesting postures shaping the light around their elongated form. In this scene I metered off the birds feathers and then deliberately underexposed the scene. This maintained feather detail and helped deepen the shadows isolating the bird from it’s background.

Silver ice rests on a bed of midnight black volcanic sand. Carved from a nearby glacier and transported downriver too the ocean, waves then return the frozen sculptures to the beach, Iceland.

A block of clear ice fractured from an Icelandic glacier, travelled down river and into the raging sea. Wind, waves and currents returned it to shore on a black volcanic sand beach where it will be pounded back into it's raw elements, air and water.

On an exposed river bank near the Bolivian border a flock of Macaw feed on the mineral rich clays exposed by rain and flood waters. Mineral licks are rare in the Amazon Basin and attract many species. They also attract predators in the same way a dry season waterhole does on the African savannah. Wildlife can be timid and prone to fleeing, so patience and hiding skills are a necessity. Bolivia.

Turtles have remained almost unaltered in the fossil record for tens of millions of years. The hatchlings emerge en-masse in what is known as an eruption, timed to confuse predators by a sheer weight of numbers. A lone endangered Green Sea Turtle hatchling swims into the open ocean to begin it's life journey. Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

The mighty Erebus Glacier Tongue flows into the frozen Ross Sea in Antarctica. These impregnable ice walls tower over the landscape and created the Great Barrier to early explorers like Shackleton. I have no evidence to suggest so, but I imagine this natural feature was the inspiration for ‘The Wall’ in Game of Thrones. It is a bitter, tortured landscape so vast and so grand, that anyone who claims to have captured it’s essence is decieving themselves.

The intense stare of a male lion in his prime. There is a misconception that male lions require females to hunt for them but this is completely inaccurate. Most male lions are not imbedded in a pride permanently and have to hunt for themselves, ergo their enormous size and power. Selinda, Botswana.

A large male African Lion, Panthera leo, stalks a herd of Red Lechwe, Kobus leche, under the beam of a ruby spotlight that doesn’t affect his behaviour. The primeval power and menace of the big cat moving through the inky night elicited distress calls from potential prey across the floodplain.

When I travel I miss several things about home; family, friends, surfing, wine and my bike all go without saying. But there are elements to Australia that are inherently spiritual for me. The red ochre of our vast deserts, the tang of the Southern Ocean and the smell of Eucalyptus forests. I love exploring the world and I’m blessed by the opportunities I receive, but these other gifts anchor me in a way that makes me cherish the Great Southern Land.

A close encounter with Earths largest fish, a Whale Shark. Incredibly, this species has barely changed throughout its presence in the fossil record over tens of millions of years. Whale Shark skin is covered in dermal denticles, v-shaped structures that reduce drag and turbulence enabling the giant fish to swim faster using less energy. Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia.
