Moonrise. A wonderful time of day, with pastel afterglow descending across a desert sky free from human generated pollution, both light and chemical. I love being in remote locations by myself, the world ceases to exist and I’m left with my own thoughts and company. For more than eight years, I worked with Critically Endangered Sumatran Tigers on a global breeding program with major conservation institutions. They are endemic to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It was a labour of love with a very engaging female, and a relationship of caution with the large male.

A male Southern Elephant Seal rises from a mirror-calm ocean. These large mammals can be notoriously grumpy and aggressive especially during the breeding season, however this male was more curious than territorial. In fact, my legs are beneath his chest and I had to use a 20mm lens to capture this frame because he was so close. Victoria, Australia.

A Rusty Crevice Dragon absorbing heat from desert sandstone. It was night, the desert as dark as a crypt. A solid days hiking and an escarpment to descend. My hiking partner emerges out of the ether to tell me there’s a dragon warming itself on the red sandstone further down the trail. I’m happy, they stomp off after showing me where it is. I can hear a cursing in the night and then the word ‘photographer’... I call back, “Let me know if you find anything else!”

A coalition is how we refer to Cheetah when they move in numbers. Aside from mothers and cubs, a coalition of Cheetah usually consists of brothers raised in the same litter. There are obvious benefits to hunting as a pair, but there are also inherent risks when females are involved. A dominance hierarchy is established that at times can end the brothers journey together.

The critically endangered Sumatran Tiger is facing an increasingly difficult fight for survival. There are less than 800x individuals and numbers are steadily declining due to habit loss and poaching. International efforts have been underway for years to reverse this trend, however the remote and tangled forests that are the tigers sanctuary make monitoring and protection difficult.

These enigmatic reptiles have travelled Earth's tropical seas for more than 100 million years. Like crocodiles, their form and function has remained relatively unchanged over that vast time period, although their size, like all reptiles, has greatly diminished.

A dry season storm descends over the savannah and a solitary giraffe. It’s about pausing and assessing your composition, removing extraneous elements and anticipating changes if the scene is constantly changing. Creating the image you desire, in the camera, is the great joy of photography. Shoot like there is no safety net!

Humanity are privileged to still have Cheetah patrolling the plains, woodlands and deserts. Genetic analysis has shown that the species almost became extinct following past great ice ages, and that there were very few individuals left to rebuild the population. At a genetic level they are all very closely related! Now we are tasked with ensuring that Cheetah are protected and not forced to the brink of extinction again.

The not so subtle wrinkles and folds around the eye of this Elephant make for a wonderfully textured image. I always remind myself nature fills every void, and in the largest of mammals there would be other organisms living between those folds. Their entire existence and battle to reproduce occurring in the dark dirt-filled crevasses of age.

I find Zebra markings fascinating, and their tails when swishing at incessant insect hordes, quite hypnotic. In the Tarangiri the Tsetse Flies can be voracious and brutal adversaries to wildlife and humans.
