On an exposed river bank near the Bolivian border a flock of Macaw feed on the mineral rich clays exposed by rain and flood waters. Mineral licks are rare in the Amazon Basin and attract many species. They also attract predators in the same way a dry season waterhole does on the African savannah. Egrets are wonderful to photograph, always taking on interesting postures shaping the light around their elongated form. In this scene I metered off the birds feathers and then deliberately underexposed the scene. This maintained feather detail and helped deepen the shadows isolating the bird from it’s background.
