A large male African Lion, Panthera leo, stalks a herd of Red Lechwe, Kobus leche, under the beam of a ruby spotlight that doesn’t affect his behaviour. The primeval power and menace of the big cat moving through the inky night elicited distress calls from potential prey across the floodplain.

The critically endangered Sumatran Tiger is facing an increasingly difficult fight for survival. There are less than 800x individuals and numbers are steadily declining due to habit loss and poaching. International efforts have been underway for years to reverse this trend, however the remote and tangled forests that are the tigers sanctuary make monitoring and protection difficult.

Beautiful yet fragmented national parks are joined by wildlife corridors to help reduce inbreeding and conflicts with farmers. A herd of African Elephant stampede across the Serengeti plain at the height of the dry season. Note how they surround the small calf to protect it from predators. A pride of lion were sitting nearby, and a cat emerging from the dry grass likely startled the elephants into action.

The mosaic jigsaw patterns on the flank hide skin of a Masai giraffe. I have always looked for the art in the mosaic of a giraffes hide. The patterns are always different, ebbing and flowing across the skin like an enormous walking canvas. When the light hits the sheen of the fur it dances like sunlight on water.

There are moments when the light sings and there is no one or nothing, in the frame to listen. There are also times when it all comes together. A female Leopard surveys a woodland at dawn from the fork of a tree. The dust and smoke laden dawn was so red and saturated I was lucky this occurred after the sun had risen a little above the horizon.

Humanity are privileged to still have Cheetah patrolling the plains, woodlands and deserts. Genetic analysis has shown that the species almost became extinct following past great ice ages, and that there were very few individuals left to rebuild the population. At a genetic level they are all very closely related! Now we are tasked with ensuring that Cheetah are protected and not forced to the brink of extinction again.

It’s about pausing and assessing your composition, removing extraneous elements and anticipating changes if the scene is constantly changing. A coalition is how we refer to Cheetah when they move in numbers. Aside from mothers and cubs, a coalition of Cheetah usually consists of brothers raised in the same litter. There are obvious benefits to hunting as a pair, but there are also inherent risks when females are involved. A dominance hierarchy is established that at times can end the brothers journey together.

For more than eight years, I worked with Critically Endangered Sumatran Tigers on a global breeding program with major conservation institutions. They are endemic to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It was a labour of love with a very engaging female, and a relationship of caution with the large male.
