The Night Walkers
Under the fading beam of a floodlight an African Elephant, Loxodonta Africana, listens intently to the enveloping darkness whilst waiting for the right to drink at a dwindling water hole. It was impossible to know what communication the elephant was listening to as many sounds elephants make are beyond the range of human hearing. Scorching daytime temperatures and a lack of browse would see the surrounding plain decimated by elephant herds becoming nothing more than shattered timber and dust vortices. Leaving stands of evergreen to drink at night reduces water loss but increases the risk of dehydration for the elephants.
